Join Maricopa's Virtual Senior Community Today!

On September 14, 2020, the City of Maricopa launched “Maricopa Connected,” a virtual recreation center with a full calendar of live programs for adults 55-plus. Maricopa Connected of the Copper Sky Recreation Complex has partnered with televëda to create a virtual epicenter for fun, education, and resources for older adults.

Starting in September, Maricopa residents can find a monthly class schedule here, and weekly schedules are posted to the televëda Facebook page. To participate in classes, individuals can register for a membership with Maricopa Connected for $12 per month and access as many classes as they want.

“Connecting our community is one of the primary purposes of the Community Services Department. During the pandemic this has been a challenge, particularly for our senior population. The Maricopa Connected platform allows us to continue to support our residents and help them stay engaged from home until we can see them again in person.” said Nathan Ullyot, Director of Community Services in Maricopa.

Classes include Tai Chi, brain games, chair yoga, Bingo, Karaoke, museum tours, cooking classes, university lectures, dance, and more! Residents can easily connect to the online community and once in the virtual classroom, participants can see, hear, and talk to the instructor and their fellow classmates. The ultimate goal is building virtual communities and forming personal relationships, which is the mission of televëda.

“We applaud the City’s forward-thinking approach and willingness to implement this innovative partnership to reach and engage our community members,” said Shruti Gurudanti, CEO and co-founder of televëda. “We are excited to offer our accessible technology to the residents so they can re-engage with the City’s staff, their friends and families, participate in something meaningful and stay healthy.”

“Our new normal has resulted in restrictions on social activities and group gatherings. This is especially hard for our older adult residents as it further exacerbates isolation and loneliness. We know and recognize that social isolation and loneliness are associated with poor physical and mental health outcomes, including higher rates of mortality, depression and cognitive decline. Luckily, technology such as televëda’s platform allows us to reach our residents in their homes and provide resources that help our 55-plus community build the social connections they need to thrive,” said Brandelyn Hughes, Community Coordinator Senior & Volunteer, Community Services of Maricopa.
